Q.  What is the monthly Youth Quest theme?

A. The monthly Youth Quest theme is posted at the top of Youth Quest page along with the schedule of workshop rotations for this month.  It is updated each month.  Once your child(ren) is registered to participate in Youth Quest, you will receive monthly mailings with the next month’s theme and schedule for your refrigerator or calendar.

Youth Quest

Q.  What is Workshop Rotation Model?

A. Workshop Rotation Model is a multiple intelligence, hands-on approach to learning.  Youth Quest participants at The United Presbyterian Church will learn via cooking, computer software, drama, art, physical activity, and movies sometime during the course of a full program year.

Youth Quest

Q.  Will my child(ren) have opportunities to fellowship with other children?

A. Yes!  Dinner time is unstructured, so that our children and youth and adult Volunteers can get to know one another better.  Rotation Model Workshop classes are divided by grade groupings for small group learning, and Teambuilding during closing on week three is a time of fellowship and fun for all.  Fun Nights are designed to integrate across the grade levels.  Sometimes, on Fun Nights, our high school youth take field trips which help them build relationship in different settings.  On any occasion when field trips are planned, your child(ren) will need a signed permission slip/medical release form before leaving campus.

Youth Quest

Q.  What is Tithing Time?

A. Tithing Time is the time we use to create worship elements for use during Youth Quest worship the remainder of the month.  During Tithing Time, the children and youth are randomly divided into groups.  Each group, having heard the story for the month, then creates elements that will be combined with other elements to build worship.  For example,

·     the Music Group suggests music and/or instruments that help tell the story;

·     the Body Group creates a dance or a drama or requests American Sign Language signs that the whole Youth Quest congregation can learn;

·      the Nature Group considers the sensory pieces in the story and recommends ways to bring those into the sanctuary;

·      the Art Group creates artwork for our power points and proposes specific pieces for liturgical art to help us visualize the setting;

·      the Word Group notes words and/or phrases that may need explanation or emphasis in prayers and in sermons;

·     the Logic Group asks questions that may need to be answered, creates timelines, suggests patterns and/or colors/numbers that could be highlighted.

As a result of this Tithing Time, our Youth Quest worship is a rich texture of contributions from the gifts our youth and children bring to the table.

Youth Quest

Q.  Is Youth Quest worship “kid-friendly”?

A. It is!  Not only is worship geared to our youth and children with lively music and “praise moves”, relevant liturgy, power point, and five-minute sermons, but our children and youth help create worship elements during Tithing Time in the closing piece of week one each month.  We like to think of the results of our Tithing Time as “refrigerator art,” where the gifts of our young congregation are shared in such a way that it is uniquely distinctive of any other worship in any other place.

 Youth Quest

Q.  How does Youth Quest provide for my child’s spiritual growth?

 A.    The United Presbyterian Church is committed to helping all of its members and friends grow spiritually.  We have instituted a spiritual practice of the month to help our children and youth become comfortable with spirituality and to deepen their relationship with God.  Each month's practice will be shared with the children and youth in age- and developmentally-appropriate ways.  These mailing list exercises may be collected on a monthly basis at the church or by e-mailing the Youth and Families Pastor.  Additionally, more methods for practicing may be found in the monthly newsletter.  If you do not already receive our newsletter and would like to, you may e-mail the church office to be placed on the mailing list.  We also offer a monthly Spirituality Center during Youth Quest where our children and youth can spend time with God in exercises that are geared to opening their hearts to God's voice.

Youth Quest

Youth Quest

Q.   What is Faithbooking?

A.  Faithbooking is scrapbooking our faith.  Your child(ren) will use faithbooking to create a visual journal, recording their growth throughout the program year.

Youth Quest

Q.  What is a Spirituality Center?

A. Our Spirituality Center is explained to our children as “time in God’s lap.”  It is a quieter time for connecting with God through various means.  Younger children remove their shoes before entering the sanctuary for Spirituality Center to illustrate the change in its use during that time.  Because the Spirituality Center is always changing, we can only tell you what we have offered in the past:  a reading corner with books about God and faith, a music center with personal CD players and inspirational music, an art center where art is created around a particular theme, a prayer wall where prayers are posted for community praying, a writing center for writing letters to God or to others who need encouragement, a nature center where items from creation are displayed for sensory exploration.  Additional prayer stations have included inspirational puzzles, word games for making prayer words, and seasonal prayer activities like rocking “Baby Jesus” or hammering nails.

Youth Quest

Q.  What is Teambuilding?

A.  As members of the Body of Christ, it is important for us to learn to work together for effective mission and ministry.  This is a fun time where we actively participate together in games and exercises that build community.

Youth Quest

Q.  What is served for dinner?

A.  Who knows?!  And that’s half the fun of it!  Parents and adult volunteers provide dinner each week, and while anyone who asks is offered a list of kid-favorites, we rarely know which one they’ll pick!  Vegetables/fruit and peanut butter sandwiches are always available for vegetarians at the table, and the fare is always delicious!  If you would like to make a contribution toward dinner, please look below at the answer to “How can I get involved?”

Youth Quest

Q.  How can I get involved?

A.  We’re glad you asked!  There are a number of ways volunteers can help with Youth Quest:

    • Fixing a Youth Quest dinner is a big project, so there are usually several people involved, from preparation to serving to cleaning up, and the more the merrier, we always say.  Inviting friends to help halves the work and doubles the fun.  Reimbursement up to $65 is available through the church office upon request with a receipt.
    • Another help with meals is the donation of non-perishable drinks, chips, and/or packaged desserts which alleviate the cost for those preparing the dinners and can be stored for several weeks as needed.
    • Extra hands in the particularly involved hands-on rotations are always appreciated.
    • We can always use teachers.  Training is available.  Give us a call.  We’d love to talk with you about it.
    • Sometimes, advance preparation is necessary for particular props or activities.  We love it when folks want to help with those.
    • Donations of supplies are a big help!  We always need glue and crayons and markers and construction paper.  You can e-mail the church office to find out if there is something you can donate for a particular month.

Storytellers sometimes visit our youth and children to bring the story to life.  If Biblical storytelling is a gift of yours, we’d love to hear from you.

Youth Quest

Q.  Who do I contact for more information about volunteering?

 A.  You can e-mail the Youth and Families Pastor or the Head of Staff if you are interested in volunteering in our program.   We’d love to talk with you.
